Why Don't I Trust Myself?
You ask three people what they think before choosing a restaurant. You change your mind after every conversation. You had a clear instinct and talked yourself out of it, again. Self-doubt is not a personality trait — it is something that developed, which means it is something that can be worked on.

Sound familiar?
This is for you if
I second-guess every decision I make
I need other people to confirm what I think before I trust it
I knew the right answer and talked myself out of it
I have no idea what I actually want any more
I keep waiting to feel certain before I decide anything
Self-trust is built on evidence, and the evidence was interrupted
Trusting yourself is not a mood. It is a conclusion drawn from a history: you noticed something, acted on it, and it worked out often enough to expect that it might again. Chronic self-doubt usually means that history got disrupted — by an environment where your perceptions were routinely contradicted, by a period where the stakes of being wrong were unusually high, or by a decision that went badly enough to retrospectively discredit the whole faculty.
What makes it so persistent is that self-doubt is self-confirming. Once you stop acting on your own judgement, you stop generating evidence that it works, and the absence of evidence reads as proof. So it deepens without anything new happening.
Interoception: hearing the signal at all
Underneath decision-making sits something more basic — the ability to notice your own internal states. Interoception is the sense of what is happening inside your body, and it is the substrate for anything we would call a gut feeling. People with chronic self-doubt frequently have reduced access to it, often because it was adaptive at some point not to notice what they wanted.
This matters practically. If you cannot detect the signal, no amount of decision-making technique will help, because there is nothing to act on. It is why the companion challenge begins with noticing rather than deciding, and why several weeks pass before anything resembling a big decision comes up.
Certainty is the wrong target
A common mistake is treating self-trust as the ability to feel certain. It is not, and chasing certainty makes the doubt worse — because most decisions genuinely cannot be made with confidence in advance, and waiting for a feeling that is not available leaves you permanently stalled.
Self-trust is closer to the expectation that you will cope with the outcome. It is the willingness to decide while uncertain, on the basis that you will handle what follows. That is a considerably more achievable target than certainty, and it is what the rebuilding work is actually aimed at.

Questions people ask
Related but distinct. Self-esteem is about your worth; self-trust is about your judgement. People with reasonable self-esteem can still doubt every decision, and the two need different work — which is why there are separate resources for each.
